Regardless of whether you’re reading on your desktop, tablet, smartphone, or any other digital device one thing is clear, digital reading has quickly become the new norm for “reading”. In fact, it probably won’t be long before the term “e-Reading” or “digital-reading” is no long distinguished between just actual “reading”. There are many factors that have led to the rising e-reading trend, but generally speaking the biggest causes for this trend would be the simplicity and convenience e-Reading brings to the market.
Of course with increases in e-reading comes some legitimate concerns about the impact e-reading will have on the consumer and the marketplace. E-Reading itself has not only increased over the last few years, but it has also directly increased how much people read in a given year. This brings a lot of new opportunity to the marketplace, but will also offers challenges to traditional publishing companies and book stores. On top of this come concerns for the effects e-reading have on consumer’s health and habits.
As outlined in their piece The Reading Brain in the Digital Age, that is thorough to say the least, Scientific America outlines clear advantages and disadvantages e-reading can have to the average consumer. Such as a propensity to skim the content rather than approach it with the same detailed orientation that you would with traditional text. Or the temptation to break your attention from the piece by checking Facebook (I think we’re all guilty of that one) or doing some other task.
Another concern for the consumer would be eye-care. As with any sort of reading, lighting is the key to proper eye-care. But with e-reading comes a litany of new challenges to maintain proper eye care while reading. Traditional desk lamps can cause glare due to improper lighting and the type of light itself. This will increase eye strain and discomfort for the reader as well as take away from the actual pleasure of reading. But the market has already responded to this growing need of proper lighting for e-Reading by many companies now offering adjustable LED lights that eliminate glare, and provide the reader with an adjustable (some of which are automated) lighting experience for your e-Reading world.
Mobile reading is a fascinating and exciting trend for consumers and investors alike. The fluidity of the market has quickly adapted to the demands of the consumer, whether it is larger mobile phone screens or customised e-Reading lamps. Of this we can say at least one thing is for sure, there has never been a better time to be an avid reader.
