When talking about habits in e-Reading, the most important trend is that people are reading more than ever due to the accessibility that the internet along with e-Reading have brought to the modern age. But with the new accessibility comes the new task of managing the tremendous amount of information offered to us. This has lead to the new trend of “skim reading”, where modern readers are becoming more and more adept on scouring through essays, news articles, academic pieces, etc. to quickly find the most pertinent information. Although skim reading is a useful or even necessary tool for digital reading, it comes with some negative aspects as well.
"Skim reading” allows us to quickly move through written pieces to find the information we need. But it is habit forming and can change the readers objective from, finding the truth in a piece of writing, to just picking out a few bits of information before moving on to the next article. It is important to remind yourself to slow down at times, and give your mind time to absorb the information, instead of having your eyes dart form one paragraph to the next, hopefully that’s not the case right now. This brings us to the second potential problem with skim reading and e-Reading in general, the undue strain on the eyes.
The main cause of e-Reading’s extra strain on the reader’s eyes is due to the brightness of the screen. This is especially true at night when someone, before going to bed, is e-Reading on their computer, tablet, cell phone, etc. To help avoid this, we only need to refer to the old adage every mom has said to their kid “Don’t read in the dark!”. To optimize eye care when E-reading, it is important to read in a well lit room. This is even more important before going to bed as you will want to turn your screen’s brightness down to avoid the kind of “restless mind” feeling that late night E-reading can cause.
At the same time, dim screens create the problem of more screen glare from an external light source, but LED lamps can resolve this issue by making a huge difference in comfort and efficiency for E-readers. The importance of having appropriate lighting when e-Reading cannot be understated. The glare on screens from tradition lights can discomfort and strains the eyes.
On the other side of things, reading in a dimly lit room will cause you to increase your screen brightness, which is harmful to your eyes and can cause restless sleep. The solution to this is having a quality LED lamp, the LED light reduces glare while providing the reader with a well-lit environment. Some LED lamps even have a multi-light focus feature where the edges of projected light are brighter, which helps to reduce screen glare without sacrificing overall illumination.
E-Reading is becoming so popular, that the younger generations will probably just refer to it as reading and make up a new name for what we are starting to call “traditional reading”. With this new permanent trend comes many positive benefits, but at the same time it is important to remember to not let the distraction of electronics keep us from having the same focus that was used with traditional reading. It is also just as important take the necessary steps in order to provide ourselves with a e-Reading environment that is conducive to eye care.
